Peer Group Independent Living Training is an intensive training program for new wheelchair users. During training sessions, Motivation's beneficiaries learn appropriate wheelchair techniques and self-care basics. A training course includes both seminars and practical sessions, for adults and children with mobility disabilities. Participants learn about wheelchair maneuvering, personal hygiene, sexuality, medical complications, social and school inclusion.
A typical training course includes physical rehabilitation activities, lectures and discussions on the topics outlined above, as well as leisure activities, that encourage participants to interact with other community members. This is a psychological barrier that most of our clients say they have difficulties overcoming and the support of our specialists is important in overcoming them.
Peer Group Training sessions are organized through the following projects:
"Networking for Inclusion"
The project is funded by the European Social Fund for a period of three years, beginning December 1st, 2008 and aims to develop a network of high quality, specialized services for people with disabilities in Romania, leading to the development of an inclusive society where participation of all members is encouraged and respected. Regional Training Centers have been opened in the following counties: Prahova (South Muntenia Region), Sibiu (Center) and Mehedinti (South West Oltenia). These centers’ teams will carry out the assessment and prescription of mobility equipments and other assistive devices to enable people with disabilities to develop their motor skills. The project also contributes to the professional development of Regional Training Centers’ specialists through training and international exchanges with our British partner, Motivation Charitable Trust.
"Wheels of Change - towards appropriate wheelchair user services in Romania"
This project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development since 2009. Through the project Motivation improves access for people with mobility disabilities in Romania to appropriately prescribed, personalized mobility equipments by creating regional distribution and mobility equipment centers and providing independent living training programs for wheelchair users. This will be done via regional Motivation teams, providing mobility equipment as well as the accompanying training as close as possible to the beneficiaries. Through this project Motivation also promotes appropriate wheelchair prescription practices among specialists and wheelchair users. We do this by informing representatives of people with mobility disabilities, medical professionals, NGO representatives and policy initiators important about correct positioning, appropriate prescription of mobility equipment, and about the need to provide mobility equipments together with independent living training to enable wheelchair users to maximize their health and independence.
"Development of social economy for people with mobility disabilities in Romania"
The project is funded by the European Social Fund for a period of three years, beginning in 2009. It aims to create a national network of 5 mobile teams that provide services such as: assessment, positioning, prescription and adaptation of mobility equipments, and training and counselling in order to increase social inclusion and employment for 1,500 people with physical disabilities in the North East, South East, South, Central and West regions of Romania. Additionally, the project trains social service specialists regarding the importance of correct positioning and appropriate mobility equipment provision. It informs people with disabilities on how to develop independent living skills and develops partnerships with NGOs active in the field of social service provision for people with disabilities.
